The Elegance and Beauty of Our Constitution
On this Constitution Day I wanted to touch base with members of the Davey Crockett Brigade.
I still get chills when I see how our Constitution established a balance of powers, the rights of states, protection of liberties in the first Ten Amendments, and the constraints on centralized power. Few documents ever written can compare in spare elegance and potential for enabling a nation to evolve a community that leaves the individual free to contribute and thrive.
This is a small campaign in South Carolina, but I believe we can and will be able to have a great impact if we get elected. This is what I hope to repair through working within the SC State Constitution.
1. Gerrymandering has created a permanent polarization around two political parties. I will work to redress the problem by advocating we use a "logical grid" that disables creation of voting districts that lock in one party.
2. The two party lock on the country forces gridlock and undermines cooperation. It encourages lobbyists and unions and big business to buy political influence rather then enable the interests of ordinary citizens to emerge and be addressed. I will encourage and support continuing to enfranchise multiple parties.
3. To the extent it can be done within State Laws, I will undercut the ability of lobbyists for big business or big government or particular interest groups to operate with impunity. I want them to have to get permission from each contributor or stock holder or other coopted person whose money is being spent PER SINGLE ISSUE. This also means I will need to enact my platform plank that any legislation cover a single issue or matter in plain English so the impact of the law is clear and pork can not be hidden in blind alleys.
There are many other issues that must be addressed; but for this first term, these would be my focus as it relates to our Constitution.
Happy Constitution Day,
Stan Smith
